PLANTING DESIGN
We balance aesthetic and ecological planting to create dynamic plantings that delight people while providing year-round food and wildlife habitat.
Our planting design work uses designed plant communities to create dynamic, resilient plantings that delight all the senses, provide wildlife habitat and food sources year-round while complementing the architecture, structures, and hardscape. We are inspired by the natural character of the land and distill it into designed landscapes that bring the beauty, wisdom, and spirit of wilder places into people’s daily lives.

We propose use of mostly native plants adapted to local conditions and whenever possible, supplement planting designs with locally adapted seed stock to create more vibrant, nuanced, layered plantings. Plants grown from seed take longer to become established but are much more resilient, lower maintenance, and a cost-effective way to save hundreds or thousands in project budget.

Our planting design is informed by and incorporates aspects of biology, ecology, horticulture, permaculture, considering soil science and health, diversity and density of plants above the soil that directly contribute to the diversity, density, and health of life below and within the soil. Using nature-based solutions, our planting design helps increase biodiversity, improve stormwater infiltration, recharge, and water quality, and mitigate erosion while improving human health and wellbeing. Every design choice and recommendation is grounded in years of comprehensive research, analysis, and applied “hands in the dirt” experience in a variety of conditions across the United States.
